Author Robert Davant resides in Brenham, Texas, and is a descendant of Richard Grimes, the beginning focus of this four-generation saga. As a sea captain of ships initially sailing to the West Indies, Grimes later pointed his vessels toward what was known as "Mexican Texas", and brought troops, gunpowder and provisions to aid in Texas' war to free itself from Mexico. After the war, his son Bradford joins him at sea, but soon transitions to land. This cattle baron established the legendary WBG Ranch, and led the first Chisolm Trail drives from Texas to Kansas. The story further evolves as Bradford passes the Ranch down to his children, and moves to Kansas City to make a hugely successful go of it in banking and mercantile.
